Dear Readers,
I am interested
in focusing my inquiry on the benefits of theatre arts in schools. I believe
that theatre can be an outlet for many students, impacting each individual in
different ways. My interest in this inquiry began with my heavy involvement in
theatre arts throughout high school. I
participated in every aspect of the department, from acting to stage managing
to light and sound design. I believe
theatre greatly impacted my performance in school and outside of school. I
learned many valuable skills that I did not realize I was learning, but helped
me, and will continue to help me, in many ways. Some of those skills include
dedication, teamwork, creativity, leadership, and confidence. I believe that
theatre should be a part of every school whether you are performing in a
classroom or in an auditorium. There are many benefits from theatre in
education that have gotten me where I am today, and I believe other students
should have the opportunity to express themselves in the same way.
Through my inquiry I hope to learn about
specific examples of how students benefit other than ways I have. Is there a
correlation between success in school and involvement in theatre? Do students
test better after training their mind to memorize properly? Is school attendance
higher in students involved in theatre than those that are not? Are those
students more likely to get involved in other school activities such as clubs
or study groups? I want to explore the benefits and how it relates not only to school
but to other parts of life, whether it helps with jobs, interviews, or social
awareness. I plan to research statistics on these topics and go further into
the specific skills that can be gained from offering theatre to students.
Sincerely,
Kayla Edge
